WBGT Explorer

About WBGT Explorer

Welcome to the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) Explorer. This is a visualization and data analysis tool developed by the Southeast Regional Climate Center that enables users to explore high-resolution WBGT patterns across the Southeast U.S. over the 30-year period of 1994-2020. WBGT is calculated from hourly ERA5-Land data at 9 km resolution using the Liljegren method. The tool supports insights into:

  • Geographic and seasonal patterns of heat exposure
  • Climatological trends in maximum, minimum, and average WBGT
  • Occupational and public health applications
  • Risk assessment across counties and census tracts, bridging climate science and decision support

Use the selection panel on the left side of the interface to navigate through the tool. Users can modify their spatial units (gridded or county), WBGT threshold (or flag level), and time period (individual month or season).
